1) Always verify the Investigator and Agency is licensed. This can be verified through the Department of State, Division of Licensing. Request the License numbers from the Agency.
2) Request the Private Investigation Agency to provide a CLIENT CONTRACT. This contract should include financial costs, identify the specific or general service to be performed.
3) Clearly state the information needed by the investigation and the amount of time authorized for hourly expenditures. Also, identify the dates and times the investigation should be completed.
4) Require the Private Investigation Agency to provide a written report and all video/photographic evidence upon receipt of final payment.
5) If an undercover surveillance is requested, have the investigator video landmarks for a minimum of 5 seconds every hour. In addition the video/photographic evidence should have the appropriate “date and time” displayed on the evidence.
6) Once entering into a contract with a Private Investigation Agency, a retainer fee may be required for the case work. This fee is utilized for investigative costs and should apply toward the cost of the investigation.
7) Always provide the Agency with a specific address and phone numbers for client contact and mailing of case information. If the information has not been received by the Client within a certain period of time, request a copy and the postal documentation of mailing.
8) Always insist on Confidentiality in reference to the client identity and investigation.
